In my free time, you’ll find me hanging out with friends, on a late night walk, or working on an arts and crafts project. One of my favorite things about CMC is the community, and I’m really looking forward to contributing to helping make Wohlf feel like home for everyone as an RA. I’m excited to be able to help spread that positive community at Green and throughout campus. I am a psychology major with a sequence in gender and sexuality studies!

Class of 2024: First-Year Class President Candidate Statements

CMC students deem the new data science major as “very admirable and a necessary step for CMC to remain a leading national liberal arts college,” according to David Roman ‘22, a current public policy major with a data science sequence. “Teaching a data science course like Econ 160 involves a lot more in-class lab work, where professors present a lecture and students operate software in class,” said Batta in response to the differences between teaching a traditional accounting course and Accounting Data Analytics. While the data science major is intended to make students experts in that realm, CMC will continue to offer the data science sequence but plans to change its name to distinguish it from the major.

U.S. Foreign Policy Outlook After the 2024 Election

With plans to hire new professors specializing in data science, CMC currently has the faculty and resources needed to launch a data science major. Lately I’ve found myself thinking about how our class functions, and how us students can build each other up. As a first-generation, low-income student, I understand the numerous challenges that come with college, even when it’s virtual.

But it’s a poignant reminder that we’re material creatures—for dust we are, and to dust we shall return. Socrates said something like this—so did St. Paul—and they both got killed. Now, the right response to the grandeur of the world is wonder, awe, and—dare I say it—humility. Some will argue that the best response to the vastness of the unknown is to be larger than life, to be greedy, to grab what you can. The universe is bigger and stranger than you could possibly imagine.

What You Need to Know About the Soon-to-be-Launched Data Science Major

I studied abroad in Milan during the spring semester of my junior year and had the time of my life traveling around Europe. In my free time, I love to thrift, listen to music, read, and gab for hours with my friends. In my free time, I love playing any kind of sport (especially cornhole, pickleball, and volleyball), dominating board games (Settlers of Catan), or doing anything involving the outdoors. One of the things I love most about CMC is the many wonderful opportunities and the sense of community.

Bill Kristol Says He Would Vote For Zohran Mamdani for New York City Mayor

Graduates, the world you enter is a wonderful place, but it has its dangers. But without the strange correspondence between our minds and reality, none of this research would be possible. Just think for a second about how miraculous that is. We’re not just stuck wallowing in ignorance. We’re also filled with what ancient traditions call “the breath of life,” which is prana in Sanskrit, ruach in Hebrew, and psyche in Greek.

Introducing the 2025-26 RAs!

She argued that this approach is not new, but has been part of the politics of American foreign policy at various times in U.S. history. Members of CMC’s International Relations (IR) faculty delivered brief remarks on various policies and approaches that President-elect Donald Trump will pursue on the international stage once he takes office. Following the 2024 election, Claremont McKenna College’s Keck Center for International and Strategic Studies hosted a discussion exploring the impact that a second Trump presidency will have on U.S. foreign relations. By making broad and unfair assumptions about the motives of Trump voters, they make these voters feel alienated. Some others also posited baseless theories on social media that women voted for President Trump because “white women hate black women,” or that minorities voted red because they were chasing the “whiteness they crave.”

It’s not the first time, and it’s different from the rest of the country. The following transcript has been edited for length and clarity. He rose to prominence earlier this year, winning the New York City Democratic Mayoral primary in June. Zohran Mamdani is a democratic socialist and candidate for mayor of New York City.

Finally, the Director of the Keck Center and an expert on Russia politics, Hilary Appel, Podlich Family Professor of Government and George R. Roberts Fellow, outlined Trump’s stated approach to dealing with the war in Ukraine, which she characterized as more dovish toward Russia than the Biden administration. Professor Jessica Zarkin, who teaches courses on Mexican and Latin American politics, noted that Trump would likely use the threat of tariffs as a bargaining chip with Mexico to ensure cooperation on stricter border policies. In a similar vein, Professor Jennifer Taw, Chair of the IR program, expressed concern that Trump—alongside Israel—may prosecute a war with Iran before Iran acquires nuclear weapons. Meanwhile, Minxin Pei, Tom and Margot Pritzker ’72 Professor of Government and George R. Roberts Fellow, an expert on China, warned of rising Sino-American tension and the potential for a crisis over Taiwan under a Trump Administration that will pursue protectionist and hawkish policies.

Addressing that sentiment—in a moment of rare optimism for the night—Professor Taw encouraged students to still pursue such work in the short term and urged them to learn how the system works so they can effect meaningful change later in their careers. During the Q&A portion of the discussion, students conveyed a general sense of unease regarding how a second Trump presidency will impact America’s standing in the world—from its credibility amongst allies to its posture toward international law and human rights. In response to such concerns, Mark Huber, Professor of Mathematics and Statistics, explained that CMC is intentionally constructing the data science major to distinguish it from the computer science major. To determine the major requirements, the faculty committee looked at data science majors at other universities, considered CMC’s resources in statistics, math, and computer science, and examined the guidelines set by the American Statistical Association for data science majors.

I’m not going to promise a dramatic transformation of our class experience. I justified my fear with the fact that I’m not American, and subsequently that the Class of 2024 wouldn’t buy into the leadership of a sub-saharan African student. I am so happy to be at CMC and I want to guarantee that everyone feels the same way.

Your education has led you out, graduation is just a step, and this commencement is just the beginning. Today’s ceremony inaugurates rather than culminates your intellectual journey, and Claremont is a mere Route-66 pit stop on your path towards truth. As you walk the stage, remember that you join in a tradition that spans nine decades here at CMC and ten centuries around the world. You’re imperfect, and you always will be, on this side of paradise.

I have so many ideas for us to connect during this time. I also hope to highlight the diversity that makes our class so great, by spotlighting groups like Mi Gente, BSU, SAGA, APAM and more! During high school, I was a basketball captain, principal string bassist in the orchestra, interned for my Congressman, and founded my school’s first Mental Health Awareness Club. Having graduated high school in China, I’m acutely aware of the importance of bridging cultural and social gaps, and existing alongside each other as full humans. CMC is a place where all of us should feel fully, genuinely and authentically at home. Vote for a president who will continue to make CMC the best place to be!
